Un DVR ( digital video recorder) si un sistem de supraveghere video pot sa va ofere siguranta. DVR-ul este un dispozitiv care primeste semnale analogice de la o camera video de supraveghere si le transforma in format digital stocand informatia pe un hard-disk sau pe alte medii de stocare. DVR –ul are o interfata prin care utilizatorul gestioneaza imaginile capturate si mai poate controla camerele de securitate cu senzori de miscare.

Un sistem DVR are multe caracteristici cum ar fi: detectia miscarii, viziune pe timp de noapte, acces de la distanta, usurinta in utilizare si ceea ce este cel mai important este navigarea usoara. Datorita acestei ultime caracteristici se poate vizualiza orice imagine fara a fi nevoie sa derulati. Camerele de securitate mai vechi transmiteau semnalele analogice la un video recorder cu banda (VCR). Metoda actuala digitala de inregistrare si stocare are avantaje nete fata de semnalele analogice
